The Precision 490 is a high performance workstation that handles the most challenging two- and three-dimensional visual packages such as CAD (computer-aided design) and digital animation. It does this partly by using exceptional graphics technology, known as OpenGL.

But to work effectively, OpenGL requires powerful processors. The Precision 490 therefore has up to two Dual- or Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® series 64-bit processors. These enable the computer to divide tasks between separate cores and share the burden of a complex series of jobs. In this way, the Precision 490 manages to achieve more than with a standard processor and in a relatively short space of time.
